Because of Lee's defeat, the Republicans were strengthened by the Union's victory. This battle caused the Union 23,000 casualties and 28,000 for the south, nearly one-third of Lee's entire force. For the remainder of the war, Lee's forces stayed on the defensive, while the Union army slowly advanced.
